Supply & Demand Lab
Economic Simulator โ Supply & Demand Lab
Overview
An interactive supply and demand simulator built on a live Canvas chart. Drag either curve directly on the graph to shift it, or adjust intercepts and slopes via sliders. Every change recalculates equilibrium price and quantity in real time, and redraws consumer surplus, producer surplus, and deadweight loss as shaded areas. Eight real-market scenarios and nine analytical presets are included for guided exploration.
Content
Chart โ Demand (blue) and supply (green) curves plotted on a priceโquantity grid. The equilibrium point is marked with a pulsing amber dot and drop-lines to both axes. Shaded regions show consumer surplus (purple), producer surplus (green), and deadweight loss (red) as areas update continuously with every parameter change.
Policy Interventions
- Per-unit tax โ shifts supply upward; displays the tax wedge bracket and deadweight loss triangle
- Subsidy โ shifts supply downward; lowers consumer price at government cost
- Price floor โ horizontal line above equilibrium; highlights the resulting surplus quantity
- Price ceiling โ horizontal line below equilibrium; highlights the resulting shortage quantity
Presets (9) โ Baseline ยท Per-Unit Tax ยท Subsidy ยท Price Floor ยท Price Ceiling ยท Demand Shock โ ยท Supply Shock โ ยท Elastic Demand ยท Inelastic Demand
Market Scenarios (8) โ Agricultural Market ยท Pharmaceutical Drug ยท Housing Market ยท Electricity Market ยท Tech Product Launch ยท Oil Price Shock ยท Fast Fashion ยท Airline Seats. Each loads a pre-configured curve state with a contextual explanation of the real-world market dynamics at play.
Metrics Panel โ Equilibrium price, equilibrium quantity, consumer surplus, producer surplus, total welfare, and deadweight loss update live. Active policy effects โ surplus units, shortage units, tax revenue, and subsidy cost โ are displayed as the interventions are applied.
Macroeconomic Circular Flow โ Five-Sector Model
[Overview]
An interactive, single-file visualization of how money, goods, and services cycle through a modern economy. Five sectors โ Households, Firms, Government, Financial Markets, and Foreign โ are connected by twelve animated flow channels. Particles travel along Bรฉzier curves in real time, color-coded by flow type. Click any sector to inspect its inflows and outflows in the side panel.
[Sectors]
Households โ Supply labour, receive wages, pay taxes, save, and spend on consumption and imports.
Firms โ Hire labour, produce output, pay taxes, and receive revenue from consumers, government, and exports.
Government โ Collects household and corporate taxes; redistributes through spending and transfer payments.
Financial Markets โ Channels household savings into business investment lending.
Foreign Sector โ Receives import spending; injects export revenue back into domestic firms.
[Flow Types]
Real flows โ Labour supply and goods & services delivery between Households and Firms.
Money flows โ Wages, salaries, and consumer spending circulating in the inner loop.
Leakages โ Withdrawals from the circular flow: taxes, savings, and import spending.
Injections โ External additions: government spending, transfer payments, investment, and export revenue.
[Controls]
Speed slider (0.2ร โ 3ร), Pause/Resume, and Reset. The flow-type legend filters visible channels and particles to any single category. The live stats bar tracks active particles, active channels, completed cycles, and the injection-vs-leakage balance.

A seven-lesson explorer of why making money in the stock market is harder than it looks!
โ๏ธ Loss Asymmetry โ Move the loss slider and see instantly how lopsided the recovery requirement is. A โ50% loss needs a +100% gain to break even; a โ90% loss needs +900%. The table at the bottom compares recovery requirements for every loss size side by side.
๐ฒ Sequence of Returns โ Simulates the exact same 15 annual returns in reverse order. The person whose bad years come first and the person whose good years come first end up with dramatically different final balances โ despite identical returns. See first-hand why a market crash right after you retire is so catastrophic.
๐ Volatility Drag โ Graphs the gap between the arithmetic average (the return advertised) and the compound return (the money you actually make). The higher the volatility, the wider the gap between what the fund says and what lands in your account. Formula: Compound return โ Average โ (Volatilityยฒ รท 2).
โฐ Market Timing โ Missing just the 10 best trading days over 12 years roughly cuts your return in half. The critical insight: the best days always cluster immediately after the worst crashes โ so if you panic-sell, you almost always miss the recovery.
๐จ Emotional Traps โ The full cycle plays out automatically: Excitement โ Buy โ Euphoria โ Buy More โ Denial โ Panic Sell โ Regret โ FOMO Buy Again. The emotional investor's final return is shown in real time against a simple buy-and-hold benchmark.
๐ธ Fees & Costs โ A 1.5% annual fee silently destroys roughly 30% of your wealth over 30 years. The chart compares the compounded difference between an index ETF (0.03%) and an actively managed fund (1.5%) over three decades.
๐ฎ Trade Simulator โ Hit BUY and SELL yourself and try to time the market. Experience first-hand just how difficult it is to beat it โ 80% of professional fund managers fail to outperform a simple index over the long run.
